Morgan has left the building

31st January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Well that’s it! My week with Morgan in the Morning is over, and what a great week we’ve had, although I was slightly let down today when it came to light that Morgan’s favourite pizza was Hawaiian!!! I was hoping we’d stay friends after this week but unfortunately after that revelation I’ll have to reconsider our friendship. NOTE: Putting pineapple on pizza is WRONG!!

Now did you know that Lord Baden-Powell was not the founder of antenatal classes? He actually founded the Girl Guides over 100 years ago today. A fun fact from John this morning, which created a buzz of conversation on Facebook when we asked what school clubs you used to be a member of as a child. Personally, I was never a member of the Girl Guides; instead I was a member of the coolest club at school..............The Line Dancing club!! MyHillbilly Rock Hillbilly Roll’ was first class. Morgan was in the Boys Brigade and surprisingly Stephen did Karate, although he only learnt how to yell “Hi-Ya”.

On Twitter we were asking what song you think Sunderland Football Club should adopt as their cup final song. 'Daydream Believer' will always make you sing “Cheer up Peter Reid”, and we believe that as we’re in a cup final we should have a song that will always remind us that we went to Wembley. A few suggestions were ‘Daft Punk - Get Lucky’ and ‘Bon Jovi - Livin’ on a Prayer’. I honestly think we have to choose ‘Dexys Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen’. It’s pretty simple; we wouldn’t even have to work hard on changing the words. Putting on my most manly football chant voice, I surprised John by singing my rendition, “Come on Bardsley, oh Come on Bardsley”. All we’d have to do is keep adding a different footballers name at the end. Keep your suggestions coming in, there’s only 4 weeks to go until we head off to Wembley!

Thank you to John for this week, it’s been an adventure. Tune in on Monday when Mr Grundy makes his return to Sun FM towers..........I wonder what mischief he’s managed to get up to??

Who would you bid for in a celebrity auction??

30th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Day 4 of Morgan in the Morning and I can’t believe it’s nearly all over.

News of Sunderland beating Stoke last night which saw them leave the relegation zone seemed to outshine my Celebrity Big Brother final update!! Well Done Sunderland, but most of all Well Done Jim Davidson; he was crowned the winner last night and rightly so.

In other ‘entertainment’ news, soap actress Roxanne Pallett has put herself up for auction on eBay to raise money for charity, and because of that we asked you on Facebook which celeb you would bid for?? Personally, I would spend my life savings bidding on Benedict Cumberbatch. Seeing as she's only in her early 20's, our very own travel expert Sam Proffitt would love to bid on Stephen Fry.......each to their own I suppose. Darren on Facebook randomly said that even though she wasn’t famous, he’d like to take his neighbour out!!! (Beware future neighbours of Darren.............) The majority of you seemed to be in agreement that either Olly Murs or David Beckham would be the best choice. Speaking of David Beckham, John mentioned that he once met David in Manchester. I was automatically intrigued, “What did he do?” I thought, or “What did he say?” It would appear David joined John in a hotel lift and John wanted to play it cool. They travelled in silence to their necessary floors and when David left the lift he turned to John and said “Hi”, to which John said “Alright?” You maybe played it a little too cool John seeing as it turned out not to be the most exciting story I had expected.

Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for the last instalment of Morgan in the Morning. It’s also your last chance to win me some cash!!!!! Hopefully someone will guess our Secret Sound correctly and not only will they win £325 for themselves, they’ll also win £325 for me, so don’t let us down!!! Have a little listen to the sound now on the website and look at all the wrong guesses, it’s your time to shine!

Morning my darling

29th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Day 3 of Morgan in the Morning and not only did Mr Morgan treat us to a Maccy D’s breakfast but we’ve had such a laugh!

Ken from South Hylton, a self professed fit fitter didn’t have a clue what was going on when he called in to guess our secret sound. After introducing him as a lover of liquorice who loves watching ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’, John had an incentive for Ken; if he guessed correctly, not only would he win £275 for himself, but he’d also win another £275 just for me!!!! As you can guess, I had my fingers, toes and legs crossed hoping he’d win........unfortunately Ken’s guess was wrong! Damn you Ken!!!!

Research out today suggests that charity shops have been swamped with unwanted Christmas gifts so we wanted to know what the worst present you’d ever received was. Personally, I think a flannel and a bar of soap I got off my nana one year was pretty dire, but nothing compared to the hilarious posts on Facebook. My favourite had to be from Thorsten, who not only has an exotic name but also received a hedge trimmer one year, and he didn’t even have a hedge to trim. Or how about Kev whose name isn’t so exotic, who received some de-icer as a little stocking filler; sounds reasonable, however when he used it, it was more like brake fluid and completely stripped the paint off his car!!!

Now I know there’s a Sunderland game on tonight, and I also know that I’m probably the only person left who watches trash TV and actually enjoys it, but instead of watching the game I’ll be watching the Celebrity Big Brother final, and I don’t care who knows! Good Luck Jim!!

Tune in tomorrow for Day 4 of Mr Morgan........God only knows what will happen?!

Stick your tongue out and say Ta-ra

28th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

It’s day 2 with Morgan in the Morning and it keeps getting better.

Continuing on from our discussion yesterday regarding Man Utd football player Adnan Januzaj who took a girl on their first date to Nandos, we read today that Nandos have gave the footballer a free £50 voucher to cover the next time he decides to treat a lady! John thought it would be a good idea to advertise exactly where Nandos could send us vouchers, seeing as we think Januzaj doesn’t need the freebie because he earns a fortune!! Thankfully, McDonald’s got in touch, and as a consolation prize offered us a free breakfast......thanks guys......I love food!!!

We were asking you on Facebook and Twitter if you had any online dating successes or disasters seeing as research out today has suggested that in the future, 40% of singletons will find their partner online. We were quite impressed with the amount of couples who actually met on dating sites and are still together years later. I suppose as a singleton myself I don’t have much longer until I’m signed up to every dating website available, especially if Mr Grundy has anything to do with it.

John admitted that he likes to read his wife’s magazines, as it’s the only way he can understand women. He found an interesting article that states women have 5 faces; Happy, Sad, Angry, Naughty (come to bed), and “Dont you dare” face. We had an embarrassed man called Tony ring in to give us an example of how many faces his woman has. ATTENTION MEN – If a woman buys a new outfit, tries it on and then asks for your opinion on whether she looks too big in it, DO NOT SAY “Not as big as you usually do”. Which was what Tony thought he should say to his partner last night, and inevitably sparked a huge row where his partner managed to use 3 of the 5 faces – one of them was not her ‘come to bed’ face.

Tune in tomorrow to see how Day 3 of ‘Morgan in the Morning’ goes and for your last chance to win tickets to Sunderland Vs Stoke.

Morgan in the Morning

27th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Mr Grundy has ditched Sun FM Towers for a week of fun in the sun........preferential treatment I think! But I can’t complain, what an experience I’ve had this morning. It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside the radio legend that is John Morgan. Known throughout the radio world for his outspoken, funny and sometimes controversial comments I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself and it’s only day one. God only knows what he’s got planned for the rest of the week!!!

It was the Grammy’s last night, and we managed to find a photo of the ladies on the red carpet. We were asking on Facebook and Twitter who you thought was the best and worst dressed. Surprise surprise, both John and Stephen thought Amber Rose was the best, their reasoning being that they like voluptuous women; you’ll understand why men like that dress if you have a look at the photo, she’s the third from the left.......

John managed to cram so much in to today’s show that I’ve actually forgot half of the stuff we talked about. I do remember talking about the Man Utd football player Adnan Januzaj, who took a girl on their first date to Nandos!! Now as you all know, I love a bit of chicken in a pitta, and I myself have even been taken on a first date to nandos, but my date wasn’t a football player who earns £30,000 a week!! He probably has one of those black Nandos cards that all footballers have that lets you eat for free anyway. C’mon, he could have taken her somewhere a little more romantic!! John told a corker of a story about a time he wined and dined a lady only for her to “grab her coat” when in fact she just did a runner and left him waiting at the table.

Tune in tomorrow to see how Day 2 of ‘Morgan in the Morning’ goes..........who knows what to expect!

In case of an emergency, call the SUNaritans!!

24th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Everyone on Wearside is still celebrating the fact that we’re going to Wembley, and we’ll probably be celebrating for the next 5 weeks. We understand that certain people i.e. Newcastle United and Manchester United supporters will be feeling pretty upset about the fact we’re in the League Cup final and they’re not. So what we’ve decided to do is reach out to those troubled people and give them the chance to speak out and get all their stress and heartbreak off their chest. We’ve called it our SUNaritans helpline, (not the Samaritans). This comes after a very distressed Manchester United fan dialled 999 and demanded to speak to Alex Ferguson so he could report a crime. The crime being that Wednesday nights’ game went to extra time and the Manchester players were knackered. We advise any other distressed football fans to call our helpline on 0191 300955 rather than waste police time. The only people taking advantage of our helpline so far seems to be Sunderland fans, and we’re absolutely loving the voicemails you’re leaving for us; one fan in particular singing “ooooooo Vito Mannone” to the tune of 'The White Stripes; Seven Nation Army'. Keep them coming!

Bradley, Tristan, James and Connor, also known as ‘The Vamps’ spoke to us this morning about their second single ‘Wild Heart’ and told us how they got together 2 years ago. They were a lovely bunch of young lads, no doubt full of caffeine, and they can’t wait to get back to the North East in June to play alongside Jessie J and Jason Derulo at North East Live. Don’t worry if you missed our little chat, you can catch it on our Listen Again page.

If you didn’t hear, Simon’s off on holiday next week!!! He’s leaving me for a whole week so he can top up his sun tan. I’m not actually going to be on my own............I’m being joined by a very lovely and very well known radio DJ. I suppose you’ll have to tune in on Monday to find out who!!

We're on Ha'way to Wembley

23rd January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

“Que Sera Sera, whatever will be will be, we’re going to Wembley, Que Sera Sera”

Did something amazing happen last night for the North East that I might have missed???? Aw yeah, Ant and Dec won another award at the NTA’s (yawn). It seems that was the only thing the Geordies would have been celebrating......(cue evil laugh, “mwaaaaaahhhhhh”.)

Total football overload on the show this morning, like the rest of Sunderland, Simon and I stayed up to watch the entire match so as you can guess we’re shattered. It wasn’t a dream........we’re going to WEMBLEY. All I can say is, “Well Done Sunderland”!!! We definitely deserved to win. I’m not going to lie, that penalty shoot out was appalling but it still has to be the most exhilarating game of football I’ve ever seen. I watched it in the comfort of my local where grown men were crying when Mannone saved Rafael’s penalty. Chairs were knocked over, drinks were spilt and I lost my folks somewhere amongst the crowd of strangers hugging strangers; overall, a fantastic, nail biting game of football. Not only did the players do us proud last night, but the 9000 fans that travelled down definitely kept up the tempo. All you could hear throughout the match were Sunderland chants! I can’t imagine what the trip back home was like on those coaches, there’ll definitely be some sore throats and heads this morning, and I don’t think anyone will be complaining about it.

On Facebook and Twitter this morning we had to ask how you were planning on celebrating today after the amazing result last night. Unsurprisingly the majority of you are hoping to catch up on some sleep. A couple of you are actually trying to book trains and hotels for Wembley and the tickets haven’t even gone on sale yet!

In non related football news, Faye Tozer joined us in the studio this morning for a quick chat about Singin’ in the Rain. She is absolutely lovely and is over the moon to be performing in what is now her home town. Don’t panic if you missed it, you can catch it on our Listen Again page!

Enjoy your day of celebrations!

22nd January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

If for some strange reason you haven’t had any contact with the outside world in the last 2 weeks you probably haven’t heard that Sunderland are off to Old Trafford tonight for the second leg of the semi final of the League Cup. Now I’m not a big football fan but even I’m getting excited and nervous about the game, I can’t begin to imagine how our 9000 fans will be feeling on the convoy down to Manchester. Unfortunately Simon and I haven’t been invited although Stephen has; he’ll be aboard the Sun FM Fun Bus, no doubt having a blast with the fans! We’re asking you to send us your pics of today whether you’re travelling down or just watching the game in your local like me.

I know a lot of people who are heading to Manchester right now. Some of them have only just finished work which makes this little bit of research very appropriate. We all know that working nightshift causes a topsy turvy sleep cycle, but the study states that because of this it actually throws the body into chaos and causes havoc deep inside our DNA. This could actually explain why jet lag makes us feel so lousy, and also why shift work is linked to health problems, so just be careful burning the candle at both ends, and try to get a nap on the coach???!!

Continuing with our new Wednesday feature, “The Wednesday Weather Weport” we had little Yasmin informing us of today’s weather. Yasmin did a great job although she did mention that it would be 60 degrees today, which seems doubtful. If you’d like to hear your little one on the radio then get in touch! You never know, it could lead to a career in meteorology.

Finally, all that’s left to do is wish SAFC the best of luck for tonight!!! Fingers toes and legs crossed that we get through to the final; all we need is a draw!! #DareToDream

Sunderlands' Secret Sound is back!

21st January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Sunderlands' secret sound is officially back and kicked off yesterday with fill in boy. The aim of the game is to guess not only what our secret sound is but also where the secret sound can be found. All incorrect guesses can be found on the website, where you can also hear the sound itself. Every day we’re adding more money to the ever increasing prize pot. I haven’t been told what the sound is; Simon doesn’t trust me, he thinks I’ll get drunk one weekend and announce it to the world.

Speaking of getting drunk, today definitely feels like a Monday for both me and Simon. If you couldn’t tell, we weren’t in yesterday and I definitely needed that extra day off work. I completely lost my voice by Sunday afternoon so needed yesterday to chill out and detox. My weekend has been a haze of celebrations, partying, family, friends and laughter and it was amazing! For some strange reason Simon decided on a very mature way to spend the weekend at a nice spa with the missus.

Now I’m not a soap fan, and I’ve never watched Coronation Street but I felt I had to tune in last night after hearing Ashleigh’s showbiz news yesterday when she announced that the Hayley and Roy storyline would be coming to a very sad end. I got really emotional when the final credits started and Roy was lying on the bed holding Hayley. It seemed important to then ask what your views were on the whole story itself as 87% of people in a recent poll said they were in favour of assisted suicides. The majority of you on Facebook also seemed to agree. It was quite a serious topic of discussion but one that Simon and I felt strongly about and we were impressed with the response we received.

"Let's bowl let's bowl let's Rock N Roll"

17th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

I don’t think I’ve ever been any more excited than I was this morning! Maxwell Caulfield joined us in the studio to chat about Singin’ in the Rain which is currently at the Empire. He plays the role of RF Simpson, the big Hollywood studio boss and in Max’s words all he has to do is “march around the stage, puffing on a big cigar and barking orders”, but he does it very well! People might remember him from roles in Dynasty, Emmerdale and Casualty, but I know him as Michael Carrington in Grease 2. I am a HUGE Grease 2 fan and it was an absolute pleasure to meet him, he’s lovely. Not only did he sign my Grease 2 CD but he also sang to me!!!! It’s going to take a while before this smile disappears from my face. Don’t worry if you missed it, you can catch it on our Listen Again page.

All week we’ve been asking you to phone up and give us your funniest anecdote about a time you’ve been to see Sunderland play, and this morning we announced the winner who’ll be going to Old Trafford next week for the second leg of the semi final of the league cup. Our winner was Anna from Grangetown who actually wanted to win the prize for her mam who’s a huge Sunderland fan. Anna’s story was from a couple of years ago on the day of the derby when Anna went into labour and her mam decided to leave her on her own while she went to the match because she thought she’d still be in labour when she got back!! We’ve spoke to Anna and her mam is over the moon!!

I love Fridays. I love them even more when I know I’ve got a 3 day weekend in store!!! Simon and I are both off on Monday because we’ve got dirty weekends planned......separately of course, and very different. Simons off for a nice weekend away with his missus, playing golf and chilling out in the spa whereas I’m planning on being drunk for most of the weekend, which kicks off tonight at my little sisters engagement party!!!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!!!

Singin' in the Rain

16th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Well last night, Simon and I had a mate date at the Empire. We went to see Singin’ in the Rain, and it was brilliant!! I’ve never seen the film, so I didn’t know what to expect. We were transported to 1927 when the era of silent movies was coming to an end and brand new talking films were making an appearance. Former ‘Steps’ star Faye Tozer won over the audience, playing the role of a silent movie star whose voice doesn’t quite match her beauty, and she was hilarious. From the costumes to the amazing choreography it was ridiculously entertaining; the type of show where you can’t help but constantly smile while watching it. The best and most anticipated part had to be when the main character Don Lockwood sings the title song and from nowhere it starts raining on the stage! I’m just glad we weren’t sat in the first few rows or we would have been drenched! Simon kindly informed me that Maxwell Caulfield who plays the character of RF Simpson will be coming into the studio tomorrow for an interview! He’s known for appearances in Dynasty, Emmerdale and Casualty; however I remember him as Michael Carrington in Grease 2. Now I know most of you will probably think it was one of the worst films made, and no doubt Maxwell will think that as well, but I don’t care. I’ve always loved it, and enjoy it 10 times more than the first one. I’m really looking forward to meeting him; I hope he’ll sign my Grease 2 CD??

Ashleigh revealed in the showbiz today a list of songs that you love and hate listening to when you’re driving. The number one song you love to listen to most was Don’t Stop Believing by 'Journey'. We wanted to know if you agreed, and a few of you on Facebook actually suggested better songs; Born to be wild and Summer of 69 to name a few. My personal favourite has to be either Sweet home Alabama or Bohemian Rhapsody, which actually came second on the list.

Tune in for tomorrow’s show, it’s going to be action packed. Not only will we be joined by Maxwell Caulfield but we’ll also be announcing the winner of our football competition for the trip to Manchester next week. You’ll still be able to phone up and give us your funny anecdotes until 8.30am and we’ll announce the winner before 9am. Good Luck!

Money Saving Tips

15th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

An article out today has listed the top 12 apps that can save you a fortune. Personally, Christmas and New Year has pretty much wiped me out for January so I’m definitely planning on downloading some of these. From train tickets to your weekly big shop there’s an app to suit almost everyone. One of my favourites is ‘0800 Wizard’, it helps avoid the ridiculous amount you get charged when calling 0800 numbers. All you have to do is type the number into the app and it finds you an alternative landline number to call which ultimately doesn’t cost you anything and is counted as part of your contract minutes. Another of my favourites is called ‘Red Laser’; it’s perfect for those of you who like to hit the high street shops looking for a good deal. All you have to do is if for example, you find an article of clothing that you really want, just hold your phone over the barcode and it scans it to compare the price of the product online and also to see if you can buy it cheaper somewhere else!! Its genius, not only that but you can then buy the cheaper item on your phone and have it delivered to your house! We had loads of money saving tips sent to us on Facebook, and you even managed to find more apps and websites to use that weren’t included on my list, such as ‘Groupon’ and ‘One for the Wardrobe’, so thank you!

Did anyone else notice that our brilliant city was featured on 2 different programmes last night on 2 different channels; ‘Weight loss Ward’ on ITV and ‘Underage and Over the Limit’ on BBC 3. Whenever Sunderland is featured on a TV programme, most of the time it’s in a bad light and we’re made to look like the dregs of society, however I was pleasantly surprised to see it being praised. ’Underage and Over the Limit’ on BBC 3 was a documentary focusing on underage drinking in the North East. In particular it followed a team of people from ‘Youth Almighty’, a project based in Silksworth who provide a safe and welcome environment for young people by providing centre based work in order to keep the kids off the streets. It was brilliant, and it’s great to know that a project such as that exists in Sunderland.

Simon and I have a mate date tonight; we’re off to see ‘Singing in the Rain’ at the Empire and I can’t wait!! Tune in tomorrow to see how it went and don’t forget to phone in and tell us your football anecdotes!!

Do you want to go to Old Trafford?

14th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

We’re football mad this week; we kicked off our new football competition yesterday and it would seem everyone wants to get involved! For one week only we’re giving you the chance to win a trip to Manchester to see Sunderland take on Man Utd in the second leg of the semi final of the League Cup. The prize also includes accommodation and travel arrangements aboard the Sun FM Fun Bus. All you have to do is phone us up in the morning and give us your best anecdote about a time you went to a match. The one we think is the best at the end of the week will win; it’s as simple as that! We had loads of people call in this morning with their stories, some were funny and others were just downright disgusting. One story was so bad that the caller didn’t even want to tell us his name!!! Basically it came down to the fact that he did a number 2 outside a football ground behind a generator.....right next to a burger van!!!! My favourite anecdote so far is from Anna who told us she went into labour the day of the derby a couple of years ago, and her mam who is a hardcore Sunderland fan left her in the house alone while she was in labour to go and see the match!!

Also on the show today we were talking about exercise! Now it’s not one of my favourite topics but Simon found an article out today which explains how only 60 seconds of exercise a week can actually transform your health! Now that’s my kind of exercise plan! If like me you made a New Year’s resolution to exercise more, however you despise exercise, then this could be the perfect way to do it! Simon thinks it’s too good to be true but I think it’s the ultimate way to exercise.

Don’t forget to phone in with your football anecdotes tomorrow morning as we’ve just heard that the football club have sold out their ticket allocation! So don’t miss out on your chance to win with us!

And the winner is......

13th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Seeing as I’m a HUGE showbiz fan I was delighted to wake up this morning to all the gossip from The Golden Globes which took place last night in Beverly Hills. The only Brit to win an award was English Director Steve McQueen for ‘12 Years a Slave’, which won the Best Motion Picture (Drama). Best Director actually went to Alfonso Cuaron for ‘Gravity’. Unfortunately, none of our British ladies picked up anything and there were 3 of them in the Best Actress Category. If you didn’t know, The Golden Globes is not only an awards night for film, but also for TV. It’s always good to see what films and programmes win awards at the start of the year, especially if they haven’t been released in the UK yet, it means we’ve always got something to look forward to. A new programme which has just started on E4 ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’, won Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor, unfortunately ‘Downton Abbey’ lost out to ‘Breaking Bad’ as the Best Drama Series.

We kicked off our new football competition today; for one week only we’re giving you the chance to win a trip to Manchester to see Sunderland take on Man Utd in the second leg of the semi final in the league cup. The prize also includes accommodation, (which you don’t have to share with Stephen) and travel arrangements aboard the Sun FM Fun Bus. All you have to do is phone up to speak to Simon, yes that’s right, we’re going old school and asking you to actually speak into your phone rather than go on Facebook or send a text. Phone us up in the morning and give us your best anecdote about a time you went to a match. The one we think is the best at the end of the week will win, it’s as simple as that! So far we’ve had stories that have included throwing children in the air when Sunderland have scored, to a story that included asking Kevin Ball to change a flat tyre!!

Ooo Bally Bally!!

Who's stuck to their New Year's resolutions?

10th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

It was in the news this morning that only 8% of people have stuck to their New Year’s resolutions and we’re only 10 days into the New Year! That’s pretty bad people; you need to take a leaf out of our books. The whole of the breakfast show team have stuck to our resolutions so far. Stephen is taking part in Dry January, the easier way to lose weight without exercise. Simon decided not to cut alcohol out completely, but just cut back; so instead he’ll be having only 1 bottle of wine every other night! I chose the exercise route to try and lose weight; I actually went to my first exercise class night and I’m in agony. I spent a lot of the session laughing at myself after I realised how unfit I actually am.

Today was your last chance to win tickets to Singing in the Rain at the Empire next week and as promised I had a special surprise in store. Seeing as I have been singing my little heart out all week I thought I’d give you all a little treat and let you experience the singing talents of Mr Grundy, although I can only apologise if anyone’s ears started bleeding. That’s right, we sang a duet, not just any duet, we sang Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers ‘Islands in the Stream’, it happens to be one of my favourite songs of all time and he killed it!!!! I know I’m not in the position to judge someone on their singing abilities but c’mon!! He was out of tune, out of time and at any point I expected him to yell “Yee haw”. Safe to say I won’t be inviting him to join me at any karaoke bars.

I hope you all enjoy your weekend; I don’t have anything planned, although it’s the live eviction tonight on Celebrity Big Brother, The Voice is starting tomorrow night and it’s the series 3 finale of Sherlock on Sunday!! I lead a pretty exciting life.

Sleeping Advice Needed

9th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Yet again, I didn’t get much sleep last night. I don’t know why but for the past week I’ve ended up lying in bed for about 2 hours trying to force myself to get to sleep but all I end up doing is talking to myself! Simon had a rubbish night’s sleep as well, although that was because someone decided to phone him at 3am.......I’m just pleased my number’s blocked so he couldn’t press redial! A lot of you on Facebook suggested Lavender could help and that I shouldn’t use my phone or watch the TV in bed. I looked online to see if there were any other ways that would help, and stumbled upon some research that lists ways in which you can actually trick yourself into falling asleep. I was a little bit unsure as to how ‘helpful’ this could be because the first tip was to “Inhale through your left nostril”. I think I might actually try a couple of them though; a few of them are yoga based tips so technically they should relax your body. Tonight I’ll be trying out “Hum to Yourself”, tip number 7:

“Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes, drop your shoulders, relax your jaw but keep your mouth gently closed. Breathe in through your nose as deeply as is comfortable, ensuring your abdomen, not chest, rises. Breather gently out of your mouth, lips together so you hum. Try to hum for the whole out-breath. Notice how it vibrates in your chest. Focus fully on the vibration over six breaths then sit quietly for a moment. Tell yourself ‘I am ready for sleep’, get up slowly and go to bed”

It sounds simple enough. I’ll let you know if it works?!

Tonight I will be starting one of my New Year’s resolutions........exercise!! For someone like me it’s a big deal. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not do exercise, in fact I despise it, but this holiday weight I’ve somehow piled on will not shift itself. Fingers crossed I don’t pass out. I just hope I don’t end up walking like John Wayne in the morning!! Wish me luck.

Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for your last chance to win tickets to Singing in the Rain at the Empire next week. I’ve got a little treat in store for you, Simon doesn’t even know what it is, no doubt he’ll be over the moon with what I’ve got planned for him!!!

Euromillion winners???

8th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Sorry to disappoint but we didn’t win the Euromillions. If I did, I definitely wouldn’t have been up so early for work this morning. Don’t shoot the messenger, but there weren’t any UK winners of the £109 million jackpot. There were 2 winners, one from France and one from Spain. Imagine what you could do with all that money.

Surprise Surprise, the main topic of conversation this morning was that Sunderland beat Man Utd last night in the first leg semi final of the League Cup. Even though I’m not a football fan, I must admit I actually watched the game and was pleased Sunderland won. I was pleased, but Simon and Stephen were ecstatic, especially because it means Stephen gets an all expenses paid trip to Manchester for the next leg of the semi final........favouritism!

My highlight of the show today was when we crossed live to the Bafta nominations announcement. I love anything to do with celebrities and I actually squealed with excitement. Surprisingly, ‘Gravity’ is up for the most awards with 12, and both ‘American Hustle' and ‘12 Years a Slave' are up for 10 awards each. I’m pleased to see that ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ is up for Outstanding British Film, although it’s up against some big names. I wonder if I can somehow persuade Simon to let me go on an all expenses paid trip to the Baftas, for research purposes obviously.......I wonder how Stephen managed to get special treatment for the match???

Also on today’s show was round 3 of our Singing in the Rain competition. Simon keeps giving me false hope by saying I’m a good singer and that I have the voice of an angel. Today’s song choice didn’t quite go to plan. I sang “If you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says 15 miles to the...” hoping that someone would phone in, guess what song I was singing and join in to finish it off, and what was the next song that Simon decided to play?? “Loveshack”, by the B-52’s. Nothing like giving it away Simon!!

Showbiz News Overload

7th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Simon was pleased to announce some breaking showbiz news this morning. It’s been announced that Disney’s The Lion King will be coming to Sunderland Empire in the autumn!!! I’ve always wanted to go and see it so I can’t wait. I also managed to find the full shortlist for this year’s National TV Awards nominations. I was lucky enough to bag tickets to last year’s show and it was brilliant. I think the toughest category will be Best TV Detective, which sees Idris Elba’s character 'Luther' go up against the one and only Benedict Cumberbatch’s 'Sherlock'.

Also on today’s show was day 2 of our Singing in the Rain competition. I’ve been practising my singing talent all morning considering yesterday I sounded awful. I’m getting better!! Hopefully by the end of the week I’ll be good enough to try out for The Voice! If you hadn’t heard, for one week only we’re giving you the chance to win tickets to Singing in the Rain which kicks off at the Empire next week. All you have to do is guess the song I’m singing......in the rain?? Today I chose to perform my all time favourite song 9 to 5; I’d say I did it justice, it was pitch perfect!

Planning a little break away after the stress of Christmas and New Year? You might want to think again as research out today describes how organising a trip takes longer than the break itself. According to Teletext Holidays, Brits spend on average 18 days planning a holiday but only 6 days actually enjoying the holiday itself. The first 2 days of their holiday are spent trying to relax and unwind and the last 2 days are filled with thoughts of having to go back to work. I thought Simon would enjoy this bit of information seeing as he’s planning a little holiday of his own in a couple of week’s time and now has all the stress to look forward to. I’m not bitter........I hope he enjoys his ‘relaxing’ time off, (nice for some).

Blue Monday

6th January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Everything is back to normal now; Christmas decorations are down, alarms have been set, the kids are back to school and unfortunately everyone else is back to work. It seems fitting to announce that today has been dubbed Blue Monday. Due to weather conditions, debt levels, failed New Year’s resolutions and the fact that some of us are unhappy with our jobs, apparently we're all going to be miserable today. Seeing as we’re only 6 days into 2014 and today is the most miserable day of the year, I suppose things can only get better!

Another bit of research out today suggests that women actually love ironing because it keeps them sane. Personally I love a bit of ironing, it relaxes me and I think it’s quite therapeutic. The majority of you however thought that this bit of research had obviously been done by a man, (FYI Simon did NOT do the research), and you didn’t agree with it at all.

I managed to fit in a quick reality TV update from the weekend. I honestly did NOT watch Splash! I really don’t know how it managed to get another series. The only thing I’m looking forward to is when Dan Osbourne from TOWIE makes an appearance in his Speedos.

If you didn’t hear this morning, I was showcasing my vocal talents. For one week only we’re giving you the chance to win tickets to Singing in the Rain which kicks off at the Empire next week. All you have to do is guess the song I’m singing in the rain.....get it?! I must admit it was pretty appalling. Simon found it hilarious that I can’t sing, although loads of people phoned in so I couldn’t have been that bad, unless they were phoning to complain about the awful noise coming out of their speakers!

Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for your next chance to bag yourself those tickets.

Reality TV Takeover

3rd January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

The weekend is nearly upon us, and things are starting to feel a bit more normal. If you’re not back to work till Monday, then well done you! If like me and Simon you’ve been working random days of the week then you’ll know how we’re feeling today and understand why we’re looking forward to completely relaxing over the weekend.

I suppose while we’re both planning on doing absolutely nothing, separately, in our own homes obviously, we can both get ready for a full weekend of reality TV madness. If like me you love trash TV then be prepared for an overhaul of Z list celebrities taking part in diving, ice skating and just being filmed having tantrums and trying to be funny. Yes, Splash, Dancing on Ice and Celebrity Big Brother return to our screens this weekend, starting with Big Brother tonight. Plenty of “celebrities” have been rumoured to be entering the house. Among those, I’m pleased to say that Katie Price, Katie Hopkins and Lucy from Towie have all denied the rumours. On Saturday night we have the new series of Splash to contend with. I honestly don’t know how that was given a second series. Simon’s looking forward to seeing Una from The Saturdays make an appearance in her swimming costume, and I think there’ll be a lot of females excited to see Dan Osbourne from Towie rock up wearing a pair of Speedos!! Finally, Dancing on Ice returns on Sunday for the very last time. It’s the final series of the skating show which will see contestants from previous series’ take part. There are also rumours that Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley might be allowed to perform a routine on the ice. Personally I can’t wait to see Todd Carty back on the ice. If the last time he was on is anything to go by then this series will be the most entertaining yet!

On to a more serious discussion; Reports are out today that you could be charged a £10 fee if you go to A&E and they deem it an unnecessary visit! We wanted to know what your thoughts were, and it would seem everyone is in agreement that it’s ridiculous!!

Hope you all have a great weekend and those who are still off work, prepare yourselves for Monday!!

Happy New Year Everybody

2nd January 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

I hope you all had a fab New Years Eve full of drunken fun and frolics. I vaguely remember getting home at 5.30am, waking up about 9am on the settee, fully dressed and still wearing my coat and scarf. Safe to say I felt a bit ropey yesterday, so spent all day in my jim jams slobbing about watching TV. The highlight of my day was by far the new episode of Sherlock, which was definitely worth the wait. I don’t know about you but I thought it was brilliant!! It was interesting to see that Benedict Cumberbatch’s actual parents had a cameo role as Sherlock’s mam and dad.

Seeing as it’s only the second day of the New Year, I hope you’re still sticking to your New Year’s resolutions. There are a lot of people signing up for ‘Dry January’. Basically people sponsor you to not drink alcohol for a whole month. It saves you money, helps you lose weight and is also good for your skin. I’d love to do something like that, but seeing as a lot of my friends have their birthdays in January and my sisters’ engagement party is in a couple of week’s time, there’s no chance of me not having an alcoholic beverage. I suppose I could try it in February, at least I’d only have 28 days to try and get through!

It felt strange coming into work today. Is it just me or has everyone else been mixed up about what day it is over Christmas and New Year. A lot of you got in touch with us today on Facebook and Twitter to kindly remind us that you’re off work and not back till next week, some of you are going away for a few days and others are just chilling out with family, (nice for some!).

After work I think I’m going to kick-start my healthy eating and do some food shopping. The only problem is that healthy food costs a fortune. I’ll only end up buying bags of mini cheddars and some microwavable meals!!
