July 2014

He loves me, he loves me not..........

31st July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Simon returned this morning after a nice relaxing day at Seaham Hall yesterday and it must have done him some good because he wanted to talk about luuurrrve!!!

Research out today suggests that it only takes 112 days into a new relationship for someone to say “I Love You”. Apparently men are twice as likely to be the first to reveal their feelings and surprisingly men are the ones who will remember exactly where and when those three words were uttered. I wasn’t surprised to hear that a Saturday night was the most popular day to declare your love, seeing as Saturday nights will probably involve a lot of alcohol which would give you the courage to say it. Seeing as it’s been sooooooooo long since I was in love (sniff sniff) we asked you on Facebook how long it took you to say it and who said it first. I was VERY VERY surprised to see that the men were the first to answer and they were actually very soppy with Nick Thompson replying to say he said it from day 1 and every day since.........(pass the sick bucket!)

Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow when Simon will be announcing the 5th and final question, giving you the chance to win that season card for 2 so you don’t miss a home game this season. I’m off tomorrow so don’t worry if you can’t hear me.......Simon hasn’t locked me in a cupboard!

Humble Spectre's and Sunbeam Rapier's

30th July 2014

Morgan in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Mr Grundy was off today. He said he had a meeting at Seaham Hall..............he probably will be there, but I think he’s just treating himself to a spa day; chilling out in the hot tub and walking around in his speedos!

Don’t fret though, Morgan returned to keep me company and once again I laughed from start to finish. He showed his age when he told me what his very first car was called; a Humble Spectre! I think it sounds like a Transformer! My very first car is actually the car I own now. I love my little Micra, especially because of the colour, it’s really fancy. You think it’s just a simple black car but when the light hits it, it’s actually purple! Seeing as I’m a woman, the colour was obviously the main factor in buying my car. Loads of you got in touch on Facebook and Twitter to tell us what your first car was and what name you gave it. Philip bought a Sunbeam Rapier for £7 back in 1970 and Ian had an Austin Maestro which actually spoke to him when he got in!!

The second football question was asked by Katie McClements today and Morgan really really wanted to give you all the answer, he always tries to break the rules. Don’t forget to keep a list of all the answers this week and on Friday you could win a season card for 2 to see Gus and the lads at the Stadium of Light.

Men Vs Women

29th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Well it’s official; female brains really are different to male minds! Researchers from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria tested 31,000 men and women from 13 countries across Europe and put them through 3 tests of brainpower. The first was a numeracy test which involved questions such as working out how much a cut price car would cost when new. The memory test involved trying to remember a list of 10 words and the final test was a ‘verbal fluency’ test which involved naming as many different animals as possible in a minute. From their research they found that across the board women had better memory skills and men actually came out top in the maths tests in all countries at all ages! So in future maybe let your husband deal with the finances and if he accidently forgets your anniversary don’t get too mad......it’s not his fault his memory is officially rubbish!

Day 2 of the Summer Cash Tour where you could win a family holiday to FLORIDA!!!! It really is the holiday of a lifetime. Believe me it doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re guaranteed to enjoy every minute. We asked this morning if you could chose where to go anywhere in the world where would it be? I’ve always wanted to go to China, Japan and Hong Kong which I think will only be possible if I have a cheeky win on the lotto. For all you people who’ve always wanted to go to Florida tune in to Mark Blacks Show to find out how you could win.

The second football question was asked by Stephen McCabe today. Keep a list of all the answers this week and on Friday you could win a pair of season cards to see Gus and the lads at the Stadium of Light.

Have you seen Indiana Jones?

28th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

I’m back after a lovely long week off relaxing and spending quality time with friends and family. Although this morning wasn’t my first day back to work......Simon and I were at the Roker Hotel yesterday for the final day of the Sunderland International Airshow. Today obviously feels like a Tuesday and this week will be a long one, but it’ll all be worth it because yesterday was brilliant! The weather was perfect, the planes and helicopters were perfect and the company, well it was Simon so I’ll go with ‘tolerable’. The Red Arrows were by far my favourite set but don’t worry if you weren’t there, you can check out our new Airshow Gallery on the website and have a look at all the things you missed out on.

Back to the grindstone today and we were talking films. A poll out today has listed ‘Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark’ as the film we’re most likely to watch multiple times. Apparently on average we will all see it 29 times throughout our lifetime!! It would seem I’ve got some catching up to do as I haven’t even seen it once. We were trying to think if we had actually watched any film more than 29 times. Surprise Surprise, the one film Simon’s seen that many times is ‘The Sound of Music’.........On Facebook, ‘The Goonies’, ‘Jaws’ and of course ‘Frozen’ proved to be popular.

Keep listening all week as you don’t want to miss any of our football questions. Keep a list of all the answers and on Friday you could win a pair of season cards for the Stadium of Light!

SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER

18th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Schools out for summer.....(in roughly 5 hours time). As it’s the last day of term we wanted to know what fond memories you have of leaving school. Simon and I can remember ‘Games Day’; the one day of the year when everyone in school gets to relax and have fun. I used to always take in ‘Twister’ and I remember when I left Primary School we had a leavers assembly and many tears were shed when we sang “Thank you for the days”. Not only are kids leaving school today but one school in particular are losing their Head teacher! Congratulations Mrs Adamson on your retirement, Grindon Infants will miss you.

Britain’s Got Talent finalists Bars and Melody joined us for a little chat this morning about their new single ‘Hopeful’. You’ll definitely remember them from the show; the two little lads who performed a song they’d wrote about bullying. I kept forgetting that they’re only 13 and 15 years old, their song writing talents are unreal and they’re absolutely adorable. After our little chat, Leondre actually complimented me on my outfit....the little charmer!! Catch our chat on the Listen Again page.

I’m really nervous about tonight; Simon and I will be waiters at the VIP launch of The Ropeworks. I’ve never waitressed before and I apologise in advance if I drop any plates, or if Simon helps himself to your food.

And finally, I’m on holiday next week. I hope you don’t miss me too much!!!!!

What is the worst gift you've ever received?

17th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

We mentioned the ‘C’ word this morning.......that’s right, a word that should never be mentioned in July. I don’t mean that ‘C’ word, we were talking about Christmas!!! The only reason we mentioned it is because Amazon have already revealed a list of the Top 20 Christmas presents out this year. Surprisingly the number one gift is a cuddly toy called the ‘Sorgenfresser Worry Eater’; it’s a cuddly toy that looks like a cross between ‘Finding Nemo’ and Zippy from ‘Rainbow’. Kids are encouraged to write down their worries on a piece of paper and put them in the Sorgenfresser’s mouth. It made us ask the question, “What is the worse gift you’ve ever received?” Mine was a flannel and a bar of soap off my nana that was wrapped in cling film, and Simon’s was a bowl of plastic fruit. One comment on Facebook beat both of those hands down; Lynn Cuthbertson said that her EX mother in law once bought her daughter a hairbrush with hair in it, and some out of date chocolates that had turned a nice shade of white!!!

Don’t forget to tune in tomorrow when we’ll be chatting to 'Britain’s Got Talent' finalists Bars and Melody, the 2 teenagers who made it to the final with their song about the experiences of bullying. We’ll also be playing the last round of ‘Food or Fake?’ where you’ll get the chance to win a VIP table at The Ropeworks for you and 5 friends. You get to sample the new menu and laugh at Simon and I trying to be waiters. FYI if you’ve already won you’ve been warned, do not wear white!! Neither of us have served food before and we’re bound to spill something!

Shaun the Sheep, Loom Band dresses and Deadly Plants!!

16th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

A list of the best kids TV characters has been published by The Radio Times magazine and we were surprised to see that ‘Shaun the Sheep’ has been voted number 1. ‘Postman Pat’ came in second and ‘Sooty & Sweep’ were third. I can’t believe characters like ‘Tom & Jerry’ or even ‘Top Cat’ weren’t in the top 10 and characters like ‘The Clangers’, ‘Bagpuss’ and ‘Scooby Doo’ seem to be the most popular choice on Facebook and Twitter. Keep your suggestions coming in because we could end up with an even better list that The Radio Times.

Everyone’s jumped on the Loom Bands bandwagon; from kids to grown men, I’ve seen loads of people wearing the bracelets and I must admit even I’m sporting one made for me by my niece. However it would seem that this craze has reached new levels of craziness. People have actually started making clothes!!!! Yes that’s right, you can buy kids dresses, adults dresses and even a snazzy two piece. One dress has just been sold on eBay for a whopping £170,100!!! I suppose you could set the kids a little task for the summer holidays and cash in on their creations? Just a suggestion, but it could keep them busy for 6 weeks.

Simon found a news story this morning about a deadly plant thought to be extinct which has been discovered at.........Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn!!!!! Dun Dun Duuuuuunnnnn. Members of the public have been advised not to even touch the ‘corn – cockle’ because it is full of toxins and acids that could lead to vomiting, dizziness and in extreme cases, DEATH. It’s weird to think that something like that is actually growing in our city. Give it a couple of years and Sunderland will turn into ‘The little Shop of Horrors’.

I am a genius!!

15th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

It’s official; I’m a genius, which means Simon can no longer mock my education. I’ve always wanted to see if I’m clever enough to be part of Mensa so I completed an IQ test and officially became a genius. It’s a simple test; it’s not timed and all you have to do is complete 33 individual puzzles. Most of them are pretty straight forward, for example 24 H in a D translates to 24 Hours in a Day. Although there are a couple of tricky ones like 3 B M (S H T R), which translates to 3 Blind Mice (See How They Run)!!! Have a look at our Facebook and Twitter pages where we’ve posted the link to the test – give it a go and let us know how you do; see if you’re smarter than Simon.......that’s not hard.

Unfortunately I was unable to go to the theatre last night and I’m gutted I missed ‘Avenue Q’. It’s like a puppet show for adults and Simon said it was hilarious. I was pleased that some of the cast popped in for a little chat this morning and if you missed it you can hear it again by heading to our Listen Again page.

And finally, today was day 2 of our new TV theme tune game where you have the chance to win a Sun FM mug by simply telling us the name of the TV show that the theme tune is off. Chris called in to have a go, while he was on the cross trainer at the gym!!! I couldn’t think of anything worse than being in the gym at 7.10am on a morning! He correctly guessed that the theme tune was from ‘Jackass’, so fingers crossed you’ll be receiving a shiny new mug in the post which hasn’t been smashed into a hundred pieces.

And the secret sound was.......

14th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Thanks to Daniel Scott who correctly guessed the secret sound on Friday, allowing everyone to move on with their lives. If you didn’t know, the sound was in fact a network cable being plugged into a phone at the National Glass Centre. Daniel now walks away with £3250 and is looking forward to booking a holiday with his girlfriend. Well Done Daniel and THANK YOU for putting an end to the sound.

It took the people of Wearside 7 months to work out the sound; however it’s only taken Cheryl Cole 3 months to work out that she wants to spend the rest of her life with boyfriend Jean-Bernard. Cheryl posted a photo on her website of a wedding ring and confirmed that she had married Jean last week. Simon and I believe you can’t possibly know someone well enough after 3 months to go ahead and marry them. A few of you actually got in touch on Facebook and Jeanette Jefferson was proud to say that she married her husband after knowing him for 6 months and they’ve been happily married for 41 years!!!! Good luck Cheryl, but maybe change your surname now that you’ve remarried?!

We started a new game today called Food or Fake? We’re giving you the chance to win a table for you and 5 friends to go to the opening of The Ropeworks and enjoy a free meal. The funny thing is that your waiters for the evening will be none other than myself and Simon......that should be an experience. I’ve warned Simon that he’s not allowed to take food off people’s plates. Neither of us have had any waiter experience before so apologies in advance if we accidently spill food all over you.

Put us out of our misery!!!

11th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

We’re at our wits end!!!!! Please, we’re begging you, someone, anyone, just guess the secret sound correctly so we can all move on with our lives! We even took the radio station down to the glass centre yesterday to give you a chance to tinker with different things and try and find the sound but to no avail. Someone called in and was soooooo close to winning! Nobody got it right this morning either so we’re just praying it’s guessed correctly at some point today so we can start afresh on Monday.

Another thing bugging me today was I saw that Ellen De Generes tweeted last night apparently wishing Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes all the best on the news that they’re expecting a baby!! My heart sank when I saw it as it means I’ll never ever have a shot with Ryan. I’ll have to look elsewhere for a potential partner..........Bradley Cooper still hasn’t officially settled down with his model girlfriend so every cloud I suppose.

One Word Weekend returned today! It was nice to see so many people who’ve planned an exciting couple of days, with words like ‘celebration’, ‘wedding’ and ‘prom’. Not so exciting is my one word weekend, ‘sleep’. Tired is an understatement so I’m planning on hibernating for the next 48 hours and catching up on some well deserved rest.

Whatever your plans, have a happy weekend!!

Stop waving that banana in my face!

9th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

You all love my random fact finds and this one was no different. I found 16 useful facts about......BANANAS!!! Did you know that if you have a bug bite or hives, you can rub the inside of a banana peel on the infected area to relieve itching and irritation? Even better is if you think you need to buy a new leather bag or a pair of shoes because they’re looking a bit worn, just rub the inside of the peel on them and polish with a dry cloth for a quick shine. How handy is that!?!?

We’ve been giving you the chance all week to win tickets to see 'Rock of Ages' at the Sunderland Empire. If you like rock music you’re in for a treat. Throughout the show there’ll be 30 rock songs performed and to be in with a chance of winning all you have to do is correctly guess the artist of at least one rock song when we play a little rock medley. If you have a spare minute and you’ve always wanted to know what your rock name would be, head to our 'Rock of Ages' page and try out the rock name generator. It's harmless fun; simply type in your name and sex and it generates a rock name for you. Mine was ‘Binx Electrix’ and Simon will now be known as ‘Jarvis Castronovo’.

FYI – If Sunderland’s Secret Sound isn’t won on tomorrow’s show we’re going to be giving you the biggest clue as we’ll be taking the entire station down to the National Glass Centre so stay tuned!!!!

Im begging you, please guess it correctly!

8th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Everyone knows how much I love food and pizza is my favourite, so I was over the moon when Simon told me about a brand new Italian invention. Some little genius has invented a pizza making vending machine!! Honestly this is no joke; you can even watch a video of how it works. It costs £3.50 per 10 inch pizza and takes 3 minutes to make. Simply choose which topping you’d like and it makes the pizza from scratch. Everything is made fresh; it makes the dough, rolls it out, adds the tomato base, puts your toppings on and cooks it. Even better is, when its cooking, another part of the machine makes the pizza box. Not only is this machine amazing, it’s ridiculously handy, because if you fancy eating it straight away it also gives you a pizza cutter!!!! I’m praying these machines are brought to England.

We have a sneaky suspicion that rumours have begun around the world warning restaurants to be aware of 2 English people making prank calls and talking about tea. We called Germany this morning as part of our ‘Time for Tea’ competition. All I wanted to talk to them about was football and they hung up. That’s the second day in a row, first Denmark and now Germany, very rude indeed.

Simon gave away a HUGE clue for the secret sound this morning and I’m praying that it’s won soon........I don’t know how much more I can take!!

Some people don't appreciate a prank call......

7th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Sunderland’s Secret Sound still hasn’t been won and it’s ruining all our lives. It would seem we can’t go anywhere without someone asking us what it is?! Simon went to Berwick over the weekend and was stopped in the street by someone asking him to give him a clue! The worst thing is I don’t know what it is and people keep asking me about it. I was at a party on Saturday and was hounded by people asking me to tell them the answer. I must admit it wasn’t too bad because I got preferential treatment; people kept topping up my drinks, making sure I was comfortable and asking if I wanted anything to eat........after about an hour or two I had to tell them I honestly don’t know what it is but thanks for looking after me!

Considering I was a little fragile yesterday after the party I didn’t watch much TV and I’m gutted I missed the Wimbledon final. We found a photo of Djokovic kissing his trophy and wanted to know if you’ve ever won any awards. A few of you even sent in photos of your trophy’s; Stephen McCabe’s daughter has actually just won loads of dancing trophies over the weekend, and Stephen Clark on Twitter sent us a photo of himself with a replica champions league cup, very impressive indeed.

We phoned Denmark today.....twice....they kept hanging up on us. It could’ve been because Simon said he could smell Danish bacon and then asked if Hans Christian Anderson was there.....aw well, I wonder who we’ll annoy tomorrow.

No Regrets, Don't Panic and Never Marry!!

4th July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

If you missed it yesterday I mentioned in the showbiz that ‘Frozen’ is now the biggest selling soundtrack album of all time and that the main song ‘Let it Go’ had been viewed over 270 million times on YouTube. Well I’ve managed to find the best cover version; it’s of 2 sisters who must be about 3 years old and they really are singing their little hearts out. That video alone has had over 22 million views, and surprise surprise, it brought a tear to Simon’s eye........he’s such a softy! Have a look on our Twitter page and give it a watch.

We were asking this morning, if you could write a note to your younger self, what would you say in only two words? Now we know it’s impossible to change the past but it would seem a lot of you had some words of wisdom for the younger you. Mine would’ve been “Go Travelling”. That’s one thing I regret never doing when I was young enough to do it and not tied down with a mortgage. Simon’s would’ve been “Get Educated”, and Stephen yelled “Wake Up”. Some of my favourites on Facebook were “Never Marry” by Carl, and Scott Barker’s advice to his younger self would've been “Apple Stock”........just imagine if you bought loads of shares in Apple when it first started, think of how much money you’d have now!!?

I hope you have a Happy Independence Day and whatever your plans are for the weekend I hope it's good and don’t let the rain spoil it.

We're Number 1 at Tiddlywinks!!

3rd July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Quite possibly my favourite phone call this morning when Simon called Iceland as part of our ‘Time for Tea’ extravaganza.......I say extravaganza; all you can win is a mug. Anyway the lovely lady in Reykjavik had the most infectious laugh I’ve ever heard. All Simon asked for was some ice to make an iced tea and she ended up having the giggles; her laugh was so infectious we all laughed along and we didn’t know why.

You all know that deep down I’m just a big kid who loves Star Wars, Harry Potter and Disney, so as you can imagine I was very pleased to hear that Disney’s ‘Frozen’ has now become the best selling soundtrack album of all time in the UK. It’s gone double platinum and has outsold ‘Mamma Mia’. I don’t know of any child who doesn’t know the words to ‘Let it Go’. My goddaughter isn’t even 2 yet and even she loves singing along to it. It must be driving parents crazy but I bet you all joined in this morning when Simon played the full song........(Stephen McCabe even knew the moves)!!

You might think we’ve got nothing to look forward to in the world of sport and that we’re pretty rubbish; England out of the World Cup and Andy Murray beaten at Wimbledon, but never fear, don’t let it get you down. I want you all to feel proud and shout at the top of your lungs “We’re number 1 at Tiddlywinks”.

What is the biggest lie you've ever told?

2nd July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

We phoned China this morning as part of our little game ‘Time for Tea’, and were surprised to find out that Chinese people don’t know what fortune cookies are??! I kindly asked for a green tea and a fortune cookie but apparently the only ones they had were chocolate ones. I’ve got to pick them up tomorrow and I’d hate to let the lovely lady down seeing as she’s planning on making a batch of 10.

We gave you the chance to come clean and admit to any big fibs you’ve told over the years because of a YouTube video we found of a little girl who can’t be much older than 4, telling her mam a very elaborate story. It just goes to show how imaginative kids can be; someone has drawn on a fish tank with a permanent pen and the only person around was the little girl, however she manages to come up with a story about a ghost who came in wearing a mask and started drawing on the tank. Apparently the little girl told the ghost not to do it and thinks her mam should call the police. You can tell that the mam is trying so hard not to laugh! Have a look on Facebook, it’s hilarious.

If you’re on Twitter you should start following Kelsey Grammer especially if you have any queries on spelling. The ‘Frasier’ actor has finally joined Twitter in an attempt to correct people’s English which I found highly amusing, especially when Simon got a text off his mam telling him he’d said something that wasn’t grammatically correct!!

Happy Canada Day

1st July 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

A nip and a punch for the first day of the month - can you believe we’re officially halfway through the year?!

Today is ‘Canada Day’ and we at Sun FM will be celebrating along with our Canadian colleague Meghan who kindly dropped by this morning to have a chat with me and Simon about all things Canada. Meghan believes Canada are famous for beavers and Mounties, and apparently everyone has a pet moose?! I think for dinner today we should all jump on the Canadian bandwagon and gorge on their national dish ‘Poutine’ (it’s just a posh cheesy chips and gravy).

Speaking of food, an article out today has described how researchers are messing with our strawberries. They’re starting to make cheese flavoured ones, black pepper flavoured ones and even blackberry flavoured ones. I’m sorry but if I wanted to have something that tasted of blackberries then I’d buy a blackberry. Just like when I buy strawberries I want them to taste of strawberries!!! Please stop wasting money on pointless research!!

Sunderland’s Secret Sound is now out of control. Don’t think that you only have 4 chances a day of winning; it would seem that Simon went secret sound crazy this morning, playing it 9 times!!!!! Tune in throughout the day because you never know when it’ll play next – we don’t even know?!
