Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

Today is Ash Wednesday, also known as Lent; the day when we’re supposed to give up a luxury as a form of penitence. It lasts for 44 days and ends the Thursday before Good Friday. Simon hasn’t decided what to give up yet and Stephen is going to give Dry January another go, but in March. A lot of you on Facebook and Twitter are planning on giving up the usual like alcohol and chocolate and a few of you even said you were going to give up giving stuff up! Seeing as I really should be eating healthy I’ve decided to give up cheese! It’s one of my favourite foods so it’s a pretty big deal that I’m not planning on eating it for 44 days! Fingers crossed I manage, it’s normally a part of every meal I eat!

Now if you hadn’t heard, I’ve been signed up to take part in the Sunderland 10k this year. It’s not something I would’ve ever agreed to considering I despise exercise and I can’t run without injuring myself, but seeing as I’ve been told that I’m running for the NSPCC Sunderland I’ve decided to take it seriously. I’m going to be honest and say I haven’t started any training yet and now I’m a little nervous knowing that it’s less than 9 weeks away. Simon’s been making me even more nervous the last few days by saying he has a surprise in store for me, someone to motivate me into doing some training. He said this certain someone would be coming into the studio this morning and surprise surprise, in walks Steve Cram, the Jarrow Arrow!! I couldn’t believe it!!! Not only does he have an Olympic medal for running but he’s agreed to be my mentor during my 8 weeks training! To be honest I’m still gobsmacked. He was absolutely lovely and gave me some brilliant advice. He’s going to come into the studio every Wednesday to see how I’m progressing, answer any questions I have and give me tasks each week. He said for the first week he just wants me on my feet seeing as I don’t do any exercise. My tasks for week 1 are to go for 4 walks and try to include some jogging or even a run; the first should last for 20 mins, the 2nd 25 mins and the last 2 should be 30 mins long.

It all seems real now and I don’t want to let anyone down. Once we’ve created a Just Giving page on behalf of the NSPCC you’ll all have to sponsor me!!

Pancake Day!

4th March 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

It’s Pancake Day!! Simon announced that he was going to make pancakes this morning so I was ridiculously excited, although straight away I thought we’d end up spending the rest of the show stood in the car park awaiting the fire engines to get here. I couldn’t believe it when I walked into the studio and saw that he’d brought his little travelling hob and all the ingredients to make the pancakes. Always one to break the rules, he couldn’t wait to start cooking and the smell was amazing! However, unsurprisingly, lights started flashing, the fire alarm started kicking off and I saw everyone in the building walk out the door!! Simon wasn’t bothered; in fact he cooked more pancakes 30 minutes later! Definitely one to watch, you can catch Simons Live pancake making video on our YouTube channel.

I found a few pancake facts for those of you who don’t actually know why Pancake Day is actually called Pancake Day:

1. The idea of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is actually more than a thousand years old and was originally created as a way to get rid of all the leftover fatty foods people had in their cupboards before Lent began on Ash Wednesday.

2. The most flips anyone has ever done with a pancake is 349 flip in 2 minutes

3. Andrei Smirnov from Russia ate a whopping 73 pancakes in 1 hour! That’s more than 1 a minute!!

Pancake Day is officially my second favourite day of the year, the first being my birthday. I love this day more than Christmas! It’s a Moore family tradition where all the family congregate at my mam’s, she ends up making around 80 / 90 pancakes and the fillings range from ham and cheese to peanut butter and ice cream, none of this sugar and lemon nonsense.

If you hadn’t heard, I’m taking part in the Sunderland City 10k race this year which I’m a little bit wary of. I’m not really a fan of exercise at all and I really don’t want to embarrass myself. Simon’s told me he has a surprise in store for me tomorrow; someone that can help me with my I’m a little bit nervous to say the least. I hate surprises, but I suppose I don’t have long to find out who it is!!

Proud to be a Mackem!

3rd March 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

We came, we saw and we sang our hearts out! It’s all over, and even though we didn’t win, we’re all still buzzing. After yesterday’s performance by both the team and the fans, I’m definitely proud to be a Mackem. I bet everyone on Wearside feels the same, and especially those of you who travelled to London for the final. You did us all proud painting the capital red and white. I wish I was in Covent Garden on Saturday night; the atmosphere must have been electric! Apparently Tesco and Marks and Spencer ran out of alcohol! One post on Facebook noted that the fans could be heard from miles away and a passer-by actually asked a policeman “what have they won?” To which the policeman kindly replied “nothing, the match is tomorrow!” It just goes to show how dedicated our fans are. Support for the Black Cats could be seen worldwide over the weekend! We were sent photos from fans in Australia, Canada, New York, Singapore and even South Korea!! Even after the full-time whistle you could still hear the Sunderland fans cheering. On Facebook today we were asking what your thoughts were on yesterday’s game, and everyone seemed to be in agreement, that at the end of the day we made it to Wembley which is an achievement in itself, and there’s still a chance we’ll be back for the FA Cup!

If it wasn’t the football we were talking about this morning, it was the Oscars. From Ellen DeGeneres breaking a world record for the most re-tweeted tweet, to Steve McQueen winning Best Picture for 12 years a slave, it was an entertaining night. We wanted to celebrate in our own style by having our very own Movie Monday. Every song we’ve played this morning has been from a film. My favourite song so far has to be “I wanna be like you” from Disney’s The Jungle Book. Stay tuned all day as our Movie Monday continues, and keep an ear out for the Star Wars theme tune!! That’s correct; the full 6 minute version will be played sometime today!

Wembley Fever

28th February 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

It’s been a full week of Wembley fever and there’s only 2 sleeps left! Considering I’ve never been a big football fan I’m really looking forward to Sunday. I love seeing how much support the people on Wearside have for their football club and I know it would be amazing for the city if the team brought home a trophy. Because of all the hype and excitement it’s actually making the thought of starting work at 6am on Sunday a bit more bearable. The photos you’ve sent in today have been brilliant. My favourite is the one we put on Facebook; it’s of 2 year old Lily Hudson, she’s stood outside the Newcastle United shop in the Metrocentre doing “The Borini” it’s amazing and her dad couldn’t be more proud.

We mentioned yesterday how people have been rallying to get 'D:Ream - Things can only get better' into the Top 40 for Sundays chart. When I downloaded it on Wednesday night it was number 39, but it’s now number 66!! C’mon people we need to get it back into the Top 40!! It would be so good to hear it on Sunday just after Sunderland win the League Cup final!

We’ve found out today that it’s actually Vito Mannone’s birthday on Sunday!! So instead of singing “ooooooo Vi to Man no ne”, you need to be singing “Hap py Birth day Man no ne” in the style of the ‘White Stripes - Seven Nation Army’.

Don’t forget to tune in on Sunday from 6am while you're getting ready for the big day. We want to hear from all of you whether you're on the Gus Bus or getting the train down to London. Even if you’re not going to Wembley and you can’t sleep from sheer excitement, get in touch................only 2 more sleeps!

Only 3 more sleeps

27th February 2014

Simon Grundy in the morning

Here’s what you missed........

If you don’t already know, I’m a bit of a geek so I was pretty excited about a little article I found today which describes the home of the future. The company Qualcomm have showed off their vision of the ‘Connected Home’ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The house they have in mind sounds amazing! You can lock the doors with your Smartphone, bedroom lights will flash if there’s an intruder in the house and there’s a teddy in the child’s bedroom that can be controlled to wake the child up and put them to bed remotely! After hearing last week that Dyson are planning to make robots that do housework, and Nike are hoping to release self tying laces like the ones in Back to the Future II, I’m pretty intrigued to see what else people can come up with.

I’ve seen a few things on social media recently about the folks on Wearside trying to get D:Ream ‘Things can only get better’ to number 1 this Sunday. I jumped on the back of that bandwagon and downloaded it on iTunes last night. It was actually at number 39 in the live download chart however this morning it’s now at number 43! C’mon people we need to get it back into the Top 40!! We need to be optimistic; it would be so good to hear it on Sunday just after Sunderland win the League Cup final!

We’re still trying to paint the town red and white and we’re loving all the photos you’ve sent in so far showing us how you’re preparing for Wembley. Keep sending them in, there’s not long left now.......only 3 more sleeps!
