Night Support Worker

Responsible to Senior Support Worker Job Purpose To provide cover for the project ensuring the safety and security of the projects tenants, offering advice as well as completing any clerical work each night.*

Main Responsibilities


  • To help tenants maintain accommodation, monitoring access to individual flats and maintaining security of the building.
  • To work as part of a team to ensure key works and risk assessments are up to date for the service users.
  • To maintain effective working relationships with external agencies on behalf of the tenants including social services and the police when reporting missing persons.
  • To positively deal with Anti Social Behaviour, following the warning procedure and serving notices.
  • To deal with any emergencies and follow the YMCA procedures.
  • To maintain void levels and deal with abandonment of tenancies.
  • To assist with the collection of rents and bad debts.
  • To complete any clerical work and input any data onto the AMIS System.
  • To ensure security measures are maintained, doors are locked, fire alarm checks, CCTV maintenance including appropriate use of furniture and equipment for the property.
  • To manage records and files regarding housing management facilitating and managing day to day repairs, including Pat tests, gas and electric safety testing etc.
  • To report any repairs and monitor any work in progress checking completed work and updating maintenance records.
  • To help with cleaning and maintenance of the building
  • To signpost and encourage engagement to relevant care/support plans and welfare services.
  • To contact relevant agencies including Management in regards to any Safeguarding concerns whilst maintaining communication with the staff team.
  • To maintain confidentiality within the policies and procedures of the YMCA and external agencies
  • To work co-operatively as part of a small team in undertaking other responsibilities and tasks requested by the Housing Manager, Chief Executive or Board members.
  • To ensure that visitors sign in and help tenants maintain the security of the building.
  • To work as a staff team and build positive relationships with service users and aid them to become independent whilst having a positive and nurturing approach.
  • Scale and Impact The post holder will carry responsibility for the support of tenants as delegated by the Senior Support Worker and for aspects of the running and upkeep of the project, including the property.*
  • Discretion to Act The post holder will be expected to show initiative and make decisions in a lone working setting whilst adhering to the policies and procedures of YMCA.*
  • Environment The Harvesters is a brand new project aimed at fulfilling the housing needs for young people leaving care. The individual needs of the client group could lead to the need for conflict and aggression management in an environment which at times could be demanding and stressful.*




The post holder will relate to the Senior Support Worker on a daily basis and have day- to-day contact with other staff members and Tenants.


The post holder will be expected to maintain effective relationships with:


  • Police
  • Fire Brigade
  • Ambulance personnel
  • CPNs
  • Statutory organisations
  • Voluntary organisations
  • Other outside agenciesIn addition to the job set out in this description you may, from time-to-time, be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary within your capabilities and status to meet the needs of our other housing provisions in the local area.



  • Previous security experience [DESIRABLE]

  • Night Shift Worker 35 hours
  • Remuneration £9.10 per hour
  • Hours of Work 20.15 p.m. – 08.15 a.m.


  • Paid Leave Entitlement Paid leave entitlement for 5.6 weeks per year rising by 5 days per year after 5 years service
  • Sick Pay Provision According to City of Sunderland YMCA Foyer’s policies
  • Pension Entitlement YMCA Pension and Life Insurance Scheme
  • Period of Notice:One Months notice on either side except in cases of serious misconduct. One week during the probationary period. 
  • Conditions of Appointment Satisfactory references, medical questionnaire and satisfactory CRB Disclosure probationary period. This appointment is Probationary Period This appointment is subject to a probationary period of 6 months



Please note this position is 3 x 12 hour shifts, 3 rest days then resuming 3 x12 hour shifts, the salary is pro-rata to this
