Groundwork North East & Cumbria are looking for Sessional Team Assistants to support the delivery of NCS programme this Summer, working both residentially and in the local community in Gateshead and Sunderland.

As a Sessional Team Assistant you would be part of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that helps young people build skills for work and life, while taking on new challenges and meeting new friends. As a sessional worker you will be responsible for working with a group of 15 young people on exciting programmes during the school holidays.

With a competitive rate of pay and a free DBS check, first aid training and safeguarding level 2 we will support you with everything you need in order to support your group of young people to flourish on their NCS journey.

Your commitment to this role would mean being with your group 100% of the time, this includes 2 separate 4 night residential with one day gap. Also 30 hours work of planning and 30 hours’ worth of delivery for the social action projects, those 30 hours will be over 4 days each. This programme will run between July and August and it will be a total of 22 days. You will be expected to complete a weekend of staff training (20th, 21st 22nd April) and attend the NCS graduation event in September. We are looking to get the remaining of our staff in place by 1st April.

The Team Assistant will work closely with the Team Leader bringing together 15 participants from different backgrounds helping them to develop greater confidence, self-awareness and responsibility. Encouraging personal and social development by working on skills such as leadership teambuilding and communication. Your role will require you to support, stretch and maximize the learning for all the participants throughout the NCS Programme.

The successful candidate will be

  • Passionate about working with young people.
  • Experience of facilitating activities with young people.
  • Experience in a residential youth environment (e.g., youth camp, scout camp, boarding school etc.)
  • Experience of running a community/ social action project.
  • Excellent organisational skills


Phase 1 - Away Residential - The first five days in Summer will be a based at a residential outdoor activity centre alongside specialist instructors.

Phase 2 - Home Residential - The second five days the following week will be a residential based at Sunderland University.

Phase 3 - Social Action Planning & Delivery - This will be a non-residential and will be based back in the local communities Sunderland/Gateshead. During this time the team will plan, design and deliver a social action project over the next 8 days.

We need Team Assistants who can commit to working a minimum of three weeks, which will involve staying and working residentially. There is the option of working on more than one programme over the summer. There will be a two and a half day compulsory training programme which will be held in preparation for the summer programme. Applicants must be over 18.
