A Petty Officer from Sunderland's adopted warship HMS Ocean, has completed his challenge to walk from Plymouth to Newcastle.

Chris Orkney and 3 others from the navy vessel, made their way over 800 miles with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

They were given tasks to complete, and raise funds en-route for The Sick Children's Trust and the Children's Heat Unit Fund.

Chris created the challenge to say thank you to the CHUF at the Freeman hospital for saving his son Declan's life.

Chris was joined by fellow officers Kieran Woodward, Jamie Marples and Steve Groves hoping to raise £3,000 for both charities as thanks for supporting his family when Declan, needed major open heart surgery.

When Declan was just four months old, he was diagnosed with a hole in the heart, and by the time he was two and a half years old he had to undergo lifesaving surgery to fix his heart at the specialist hospital.

While Declan underwent open heart surgery and recovered on the children's heart unit, Chris and wife Nicola were supported at Scott House, run by The Sick Children's Trust.

Welcome party at Scott House

Scott House is free 'Home from Home' accommodation located on the hospital grounds and meant that Declan's parents were never more than just a few minutes' walk from his side.

They've raised in the region of over 10 thousand pounds for the charities and Chris explains how people found out about what they were doing.
