(Updated 4:47am 14th September 2017)

The Empire Cinema in Sunderland has been evacuated due to a fire.

Fire services were called to the scene.

Kim was at the cinema when it happened:

"It happened about an hour ago, a fire engine arrived and we left.

"We were told it was closed for the rest of the night and we could have a refund if we kept our tickets.

"A voice came over the tannoy and asked us to leave then we were let back and told they would put the film back on, it came back on with volume but no picture then 5 mins later it came back over the tannoy to leave again and as we left we could smell burning".

Hundreds were evacuated in total.

The blaze was reported to have broken out in an electrical cupboard.

However the incident is under investigation.

Earlier this evening, Empire Cinema gave the following statement on their Facebook page:

Please note that due to circumstances beyond our control this cinema is currently CLOSED.
We will post further updates and details for claiming refunds for cancelled shows asap tomorrow. We will not be able to reply to individual posts via Facebook / Twitter etc.
