Council Tax could rise in 2018

Council Chambers2

10:01am 20th December 2017

Next year could signal a tougher financial time for council tax payers.

It's after the government relaxed the limit on how much local authorities could charge, with Communities Minister Sajid Javid allowing each authority to make its own decision.

Every area can increase council tax by around 3 per cent, but in England it can rise by nearly 6 per cent to pay for extra social care costs.

That could mean council tax increases in England and Wales - which could mean a typical property paying up to an extra 100 pounds a year.

Sunderland City Council have confirmed to Sun FM in a statement that:

"Further details on the council’s budget, including the proposed council tax, will be announced at the beginning of 2018."
