South Shields MP calls on action on hunger

London Parliament2

(Updated 8:33am 31st January 2018)

A North East MP wants the Government to measure food insecurity to help tackle a growing problem.

It's as a group of charities warn nearly a quarter of parents are skipping meals because they cannot afford to buy food.

End Hunger UK says its report reveals shocking levels of "hidden hunger" - with one in twelve saying they had gone a whole day without eating due to a lack of money.

South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck is putting forward a bill on the issue in Parliament this Friday.

Emma also believes there's a growing problem with homelessness.

Another report claims a recent rise in homelessness is due to welfare reform and rising housing costs.

Researchers from the University of Oxford say nearly 5-thousand people slept rough in England last year - more than two and a half times higher than in 2010.

Charities believe the true figure could be much higher.
