Flood alert in force for the Wearside coast

High waves

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the Tyne and Wear coast.

Flooding is possible from the North Sea from St Mary's Lighthouse to North Hartlepool.

They are urging Wearsiders to be prepared for flooding this afternoon. 

This alert is issued for high tide at 4pm, where there will be higher than average tides and wave conditions leading to overtopping and spray at Roker Seafront, Seaburn Promenade, Hendon Promenade and Cullercoats Bay.

The expected period is between 2.30pm and 6pm.

People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast.
