Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Newcastle yesterday.

At around 12.30pm, police received a report of a collision between a female pedestrian and a Stagecoach bus on John Dobson Street near to Newcastle City Library.

Emergency services attended and the road was closed to allow police to carry out their enquiries, the road reopened at 3.30pm this afternoon.

A 78 year old woman was taken to the RVI hospital with serious life-threatening injuries and has since sadly passed away.

She has been named as Pauline Howell from the Newcastle area.

Sergeant Steve Armstrong said:

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mrs Howell at this very difficult time. At the time of this collision, Newcastle City Centre was busy with people going about their day to day business.

"We know that there were a number of pedestrians in the area who may have witnessed the collision and I would appeal for anyone who did not provide their details to police at the scene to contact the Motor Patrols investigation team”.

If you saw anything please contact Motor Patrols on 101 quoting log number 440 05/02/18
