Europe descends on Sunderland

Sunderland tennis centre Opening Ceremony flags

We may be leaving Europe but starting today, the Continent will be coming to Wearside.

Tomorrow morning the European Tennis Finals for the girls' Under 12's will start in Sunderland.

Great Britain were one of the 8 teams that qualified along with Russia, Ukraine and France.

Graham Fowler is from the Silksworth Tennis Centre and says stars of the future will be on show across the weekend:

All eight nations will be arriving throughout today to practice before the prestigious tournament starts with an opening ceremony at 9.30am tomorrow (Friday)

There will be anthems, flags, and a speech from the Mayor of Sunderland, followed by a teams, players and officials meeting the media.

The first tennis balls will be hit when play take place from Friday and across the weekend with the closing ceremony and medal presentation taking place at around 2.45pm on Sunday.

Graham Fowler says this is an opportunity to see the next winners of Wimbledon before they hit the big time.
