Transport chaos due to snow

Snow hit Wearmouth bridge

The snowy weather is causing travel chaos on North East roads.

1810 - The A19 is currently closed southbound just after Hylton Bridge to all traffic, long delays in the area due to a broken down lorry.

Drivers are being urged to take extra care and plan their journeys in advance.

An amber alert is in place for today and will remain in place until tomorrow (Thursday) reducing to yellow for Friday and Saturday.

Public transport is also being hit with bus timetable affected.

Steve Walker, Managing Director for Stagecoach NE has said in a statement:

"I can confirm that our depots in Newcastle, Sunderland, South Shields, Stockton and Hartlepool are all operating services, but these are subject to significant delays and route changes. Residents in isolated housing estates are advised to use main road bus stops wherever possible.  We would also urge customers to follow us on Twitter @StagecoachNE for the very latest service updates throughout the day."
