Amber alert for flooding at Roker seafront

Roker Pier Beast from EastDean Matthews

12:38pm 3rd March 2018
(Updated 12:42pm 3rd March 2018)

An amber alert for flooding at Roker Beach is in place for this afternoon's high tides from 3:45pm until 5:30pm.

The Environment Agency has advised that overtopping is likely two to hour hours either side of the high tides.

Part of the North Pier has collapsed and the new railings at Roker Pier have been bent or swept away.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said :

"The warning for Roker seafront, Sunderland will remain in force for this afternoon’s high tide between 15:45 to 17:30 (Saturday 3rd March). Wave overtopping is likely, and conditions may apply two to four hours either side of high tide. Moderate spring tides combined with strong onshore winds are causing large waves and spray, so please take care in this location and near coastal paths and promenades. This may cause localised standing water on roads. Do not drive through flood water or large waves. We will continue to monitor the conditions, and this message will be updated on Saturday 3rd March for subsequent tides as required or if the situation changes."
