Northern Rail staff stage walk out

Northern rail train

1:41pm 3rd March 2018
(Updated 3:05pm 3rd March 2018)

Workers from Northern rail will strike today, with anotehr fight over driver only trains.

Despite the strike, more than a thousand services will still take place, with many of them being between 7am and 7pm.

Replacement buses have been scheduled where rail services are not available.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said:

"Every single effort that RMT has made to reach negotiated settlements in these separate disputes with Northern and Merseyrail over safe operation and safe staffing has been kicked back in our faces. No one should be in any doubt, these disputes are about putting the safety of the travelling public before the profits of the private train companies

"It is frankly ludicrous that we have been able to negotiate long-term arrangements in Scotland and Wales that protect the guards and passenger safety but we are being denied the same opportunities with rail companies in England.

"Theresa May and Chris Grayling are happy to stand aside and cheer on overseas rail companies that rip-off the British passenger with eye-watering far increases to subsidise their domestic transport operations while throwing the guards off our trains. If it's good enough for Wales and Scotland to put safety first then it's good enough for the rest of the UK.

"RMT remains ready for talks in both of these disputes."

Sharon Keith, Regional Director at Northern, said:

"We have planned carefully to provide the best possible rail and rail replacement services for our customers.

"We will operate more rail services than ever before for a Saturday RMT strike and are doing everything we can to keep the north of England on the move."

"Anyone who is planning to travel using Northern services on Saturday should plan ahead carefully and allow extra time for any journeys. Our services will be busy and, in some cases, may not follow the usual stopping patterns. Some routes may also be served by other train operators, so it is vital our customers think ahead."
