Drivers have been finding alternative routes as a major road between Sunderland and Durham remained closed off to traffic all weekend.

Police have now given an update on the A690 at Houghton cut, saying they're currently working with partners in order resolve the issue.

Westbound is still currently closed, but the Eastbound carriageway will be down to one lane and a speed limit of 10 to 15 mph.

A major route into Durham from Sunderland remains shut this morning (Monday).

The A690 road has been closed throughout the weekend after the heavy snow fall made a section of the area impassable.

The road between the A19 and Houghton was closed off on Friday afternoon following a decision by Sunderland City Council and Northumbria Police.

There were fears a snow drift could collapse on the road with hazardous conditions in the area.
