A major route into Durham from Sunderland remains shut this morning (Monday).

The A690 road has been closed throughout the weekend after the heavy snow fall made a section of the area impassable.

The road between the A19 and Houghton was closed off on Friday afternoon following a decision by Sunderland City Council and Northumbria Police.

There were fears a snow drift could collapse on the road with hazardous conditions in the area.
