Celebrating women on Wearside

Hope Street Xchange building

(Updated 6:37am 8th March 2018)

There's celebrations across the world for the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

It's International Women's Day - marking a call to action for gender equality.

Here on Wearside, Hope Street XChange will see women in businesses come together to inspire others.

One of the organisers, Louise Kennedy, tells Sun FM how the day came about:

The event on Tyneside last year saw over 100 delegates attend.

The four entrepreneurial business colleagues, who are passionate about the North East, are championing the success of females in the workplace.

They have joined forces to organise a one day conference aiming to show the importance of women at work and what can be achieved for people who decide to go it alone or work within corporate environment.

They will show the passion and capability of many amazing ladies who step outside of their comfort zone to achieve, with inspiring speakers, ample networking opportunities.

Louise tells Sun FM starting her own business opened her eyes to gender inequality.

Another one of the team is Jenny Banks from Sunderland Software City who says it's not just females who are being invited along today.

The free event at the Hope Street Xchange, (SR1 3QD) is open between 8:30am to 2pm this afternoon. (Thursday 8th March).
