UPDATE: Police charge 4 men after a violent attack in Sunderland

An investigation is underway after a man was attacked in Sunderland city centre by a gang of people.

Just before 2 on Saturday afternoon (1:40) he was assaulted, while walking along Vine Place, close to the bus stops near T.K. Maxx.

The man suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Enquiries are ongoing and officers have identified a group of people who are assisting police with their enquiries.

Neighbourhood Detective, Kelly Scott wants to reassure the community, she said:

"Incidents like this are rare and our officers are currently carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances of the incident."

"We urge anyone with any information, or who may have witnessed the incident, to get in touch with us via 101 and quote reference number 601 14/04/18."

UPDATE

Police have now charged four men after an assault in Sunderland city centre over the weekend.

He suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the attack, but has since been discharged from hospital.

Police have now arrested and charged four men.

All four are due to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates' Court.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to get in touch via 101 quoting reference number 601 14/04/18.
