Armed police have been called into action in a street in Sunderland.

Police presence and helicopters were called to deal with an incident in Elmwood Street this afternoon.

Northumbria Police said their presence was in relation to a "firearms incident" after shots were fired at a house in Craigshaw Square on Monday.

Northumbria Police have said: 'Police are in attendence in the Elmwood Street area, in relation to a 'firearms incident' at a house in Craigshaw square on Monday.

Five people have been arrested, in response to the incident as part of ongoing enquries. Police are remaining in the area to offer reassurance to residents'
