At City Bistro we are passionate about every aspect of good food and good service.

From sourcing key, tasty ingredients and developing seasonally inspired menus to top-class service and presentation, you can expect that and more when you visit us.

We are a training restaurant, our kitchen is full of up-and-coming chef talent, led by seasoned professionals, including Head Chef, Kelvin (formerly Peace and Loaf and Jesmond Dene House) and Restaurant Manager, Himal (formerly Hilton Garden Inn). Our impressive 80-cover, fine-dining restaurant is situated within Sunderland College’s City Campus, right opposite Park Lane Interchange and offers a high-end experience without the high-end price tag.

City Bistro is located in Sunderland City Centre within Sunderland college, but the great thing is it’s right at the front so you don’t have to walk through the whole college to get there. I have to say although it is a training kitchen and all of the chefs (apart from the Head Chef) are students you would never know from the quality of the food, it looks and tastes better than some restaurants I’ve been in.

When you walk through the doors you can see immediately that this is something special. It has very modern deco and everything is bright and clean. I was shown to my table, which had a great view of the kitchen so you can see everything going on, which is a nice touch. It has the feel of a high end restaurant and the food and service reflects this too. I was treated to a selection of dishes to try to give me a better idea of the food that is served, I was completely spoilt. To start with I had Pork terrine with pickles and sour dough, beetroot risotto with goats curd and watercress salad and also I tried home cured Salmon with cucumber, apple and chive oil. You can see from the video that the food looks stunning and it tasted amazing too. The beetroot risotto was a beautiful pink colour and was something I’d never had before. It is a vegetarian dish but I was more than happy to eat it. The pork terrine was my favourite out of the three. It was a like a thick pate really, and the combination of flavours worked perfectly. The Salmon too was fresh and light, and it was a real treat to be eating the food.

For main course I again was spoilt with a couple of dishes with Pan fried Hake, with creamed greens and crushed potatoes and then also slow cooked feather blade with mash and buttered greens. They say you eat with your eyes first and I couldn’t wait to dive in when the plates where put in front of me. The fish was meaty and perfectly cooked, and the veg was just enough so that the fish remained the main part of the dish. The beef was soft and tasty with a mix of flavour from the outside to the centre. It’s a cut of meat I’d never tried before but would definitely again as it was a cut that is full of flavour. The gravy and veg complemented the dish beautifully and again I felt I was in a fine dining restaurant with food cooked by chefs with years of experience, but these guys really know how to cook and it was fabulous.

I was going to stop there but I was persuaded to try some dessert and I ‘m so glad I did. Dark Chocolate mousse with honey comb and cream and also a lemon posset with raspberries and shortbread biscuit. The chocolate mousse was think and rich in contrast to the lemon posset which was light and tangy.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at City Bistro and I’d encourage you to go and try it as once you’ve been you’ll go again and again. If you go to the same places over and over try something different in a remarkable setting. Also with one of our vouchers you will be getting great value for money.

(I feel I should say that although it seems I had a lot of food I was given smaller portions….honest!!)
